Hello, I received the follwoing info from the National Archives, Kew: "As far as I am aware there is no significance to a German Prisoner of War (PoW) having a number with an A or B prefix, indeed, I have seen examples where the PoW number has no letter prefix. The numbers are those on the form A.F.W 3000 that each prisoner completed and are the same as the one on the board held by German PoWs in surviving photographs. Presumably the forms were randomly taken from numbered pads as and when needed. It is conceivable that the three number sequences refer to the grading of each PoW as ‘white’,‘ grey’ or ‘black’ according to their political affiliation. However, I have not seen any documentation to prove or disprove this possibility." Regards, Stefan
