Hello. The A and the B stand for (A)merican and (B)ritish zone. This relates to who captured or whom the prisoner surrendered to. I am not sure how either managed to keep a tally of the numbers used though with literally thousands of PoWs passing through so I daresay there may might have been accidental/erroneous duplicates although I have never come across any !
